Location, History and Setting

Workington is Allerdale’s biggest urban area with a population of about 25,500. It has a wide mix of residential, business and retail locations, as well as good leisure and entertainment facilities. It also has a wide range of housing options, from traditional townhouses to extensive family properties, located both in and around the busy town centre, and in its outlying suburbs.

The Ashfield Road South site is owned by Allerdale Borough Council and was earmarked for housing in the borough’s 1999 Local Plan. It is located next to the existing Moorclose housing development, a popular residential area, which is made up of a variety of styles of houses and flats, and close to the Salterbeck and Westfield estates too. The area has good local amenities and excellent transport links to Workington town centre.

Our Proposals

Allerdale Investment Partnership’s aim is to secure outline planning permission for around 220 homes on the Ashfield Road site, making it an attractive proposition for a developer to purchase. It could then be designed to meet the community’s needs in terms of homes and green spaces, and be an attractive environment for people to live and play.


Benefits that will result from the development of the Ashfield Road South site include:

  • A modern, well-designed development featuring properties of all shapes and sizes – including affordable housing – will bring much-needed homes to this part of Workington,

  • It will also help regenerate this area,

  • It will boost its economy, bringing construction jobs and training opportunities,

  • A legacy of desirable properties which meet the needs of the community.
